If you don’t need phone or Internet access (when you’re simply listening to music or watching a movie and don’t want to be interrupted, for instance), consider put your iPhone in Airplane mode. This will shut off several internal components, dramatically increasing overall battery life.

Check settings, turn off functions
Use the Settings application to turn off any features you aren’t using. If, for instance, you’re in an area without accessible Wi-Fi hotspots, tap on Wi-Fi and drag the slider to Off. If you’re not using Bluetooth, tap General, then Bluetooth and slide the function to Off.

Reduce brightness, use Auto-Brightness
The iPhone’s beautiful screen is its biggest power glutton. Tap the Settings application, then tap Brightness. Use the slider to reduce overall brightness to an acceptable level, and turn the Auto-Brightness function On — this will automatically adjust screen brightness based on ambient light conditions.

Don’t persistently check for mail
The Monday after the iPhone’s launch (three days of usage), one of our staff members’ unit still had a remaining charge, while the other’s had been recharged several times already. The primary difference? The latter individual’s iPhone was checking email from several account every 15 minutes. Reducing this interval to every hour (In Settings, choose Mail then tap Auto-Check) or Manual significantly increased battery life. If you are going to use a short mail-checking interval, tap the Sounds pane of Settings and turn the option for New Mail off.

Turn off keyboard clicks
If you frequently use your iPhone’s keyboard, navigate to the Sounds pane of Settings and turn the option for Keyboard clicks off.

Set a low Auto-Lock inerval
Go to Settings then select General, then Auto-Lock. The lower this setting (in minutes) the sooner your iPhone will go into locked mode, which turns off the screen and other functions, saving significant battery power.

Turn off the equalizer
Apple recommends turning off the music equalizer if you don’t use it. “Adding EQs to playback uses more of your processor, since they aren’t encoded in the song. If, however, you’ve added EQ to tracks in iTunes, you’ll need to set EQ to ‘flat’ in order to have the effect of “off,” because iPhone keeps your iTunes settings intact.” You can access the equalizer option by tapping iPod in Settings, then tapping EQ. Select the option Flat to reduce power consumption.
This was quoted from a part of www.iphoneatlas.com reports

and here is the battery consumption chart VS many of the other phones

As of now my team is sitting just 6 points outside the play off-zones, which looks more than getable as the teams we are up against are low in the league and in the relegation zone. And the future looks quite promising. More details when i have the time..

uTorrent is the best file sharing software out there in my opinion, however with this update, there are concerns about uTorrent spying on its user’s download activities on behalf of RIAA/MPAA. That is not true, it monitors your download activity just in case your dowloading something that might not be DRM’d for your own protection. DRM is only there to save you from yourselves… DRM means high-quality, full-length content.

And here’s something funny I picked from the replies in a discussion from the source..

And it’s not just for your own personal safety, you selfish losers. It’s to stop communism, everyone knows that P2P and especially the “popular” uTorrent are used by Russian ultranationalists trying to corrupt the rest of the world by injecting the concept of “sharing” stuff that no one owns - that’s absoloutely unamerican!

You can’t criticize DRM and most certainly not the RIAA/MPAA, because they’re doing it for national security reasons as their upcoming lawsuits will reveal:

Judge: And where is the evidence of theft?
RIAA Counsler: Your Honor, seeing as this is a matter of national security and the freedom of capitalim and democracy is at stake, The Patriot Act clearly states you have no right to this evidence!

µTorrent is an efficient and feature rich BitTorrent client for Windows sporting a very small footprint. It was designed to use as little cpu, memory and space as possible while offering all the functionality expected from advanced clients. Most of the features present in other BitTorrent clients are present in µTorrent, including bandwidth prioritization, scheduling, RSS auto-downloading and Mainline DHT (compatible with BitComet). Additionally, µTorrent supports the Protocol Encryption joint specification (compatible with Azureus 2.4.0.0 and above, BitComet 0.63 and above) and peer exchange. µTorrent was written with efficiency in mind. Unlike many torrent clients, it does not hog valuable system resources - typically using less than 6MB of memory, allowing you to use the computer as if it weren’t there at all. Additionally, the program itself is contained within a single executable less than 220 KB in size.

Features:
* Multiple simultaneous downloads
* Configurable bandwidth scheduler
* Global and per-torrent speed limiting
* Quick-resumes interrupted transfers
* RSS Downloader
* Trackerless support (Mainline DHT)

Be warned, this is an alpha, not a beta, so bugs are to be expected, and it is not to be considered feature complete. Don’t test this on private trackers without explicit permission from staff, if you value your account. Please test and report bugs/crashes/etc. Thanks.

So, it is official then. Apple is at war with its own users! In the history of the company this is the first instance when the company has takes such a step to protect its propaganda!! I for one apple fan detest the move which is obviously pushed by AT&T. For the general public good let’s hope some noble hacker is able to see the better of these two companies. The funny things is, the update is also adversely affecting untouched, unmodified and locked iPhones.Users who have faithfully used the iPhone with AT&T plans are also complaining of the same problem. If you have unlocked your iPhone (or for that matter haven’t) I suggest you do not update the firmware as it is of no good use and can only cause unwanted issues.

If you are planning on updating your iPhone firmware click here

If you have already updated your unlocked iPhone click here

If you have already updated your locked iPhone click here

If your iPhone is inoperable after the firmware update click here for what to do next

An Apple software update is disabling iPhones that have been unlocked by owners who wanted to choose which mobile network to use.

Earlier this week Apple said a planned update would leave the device “permanently inoperable”.

Thousands of iPhone owners hacked their expensive gadget in order to unlock it for use with other mobile carriers and to run a host of unsupported programs.

There are also reports of the update causing issues with unaltered iPhones.

On Monday Apple issued a statement in which it said many of the unauthorised iPhone unlocking programs caused “irreparable damage” to the device’s software.

The company said this would “likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed”.

That warning has now proved correct as many owners are reporting their phones no longer work following installation of the update.

Apple requires iPhone owners to take out a lengthy contract with AT&T in the United States but there are a number of programs on the net that unlock the device for use with other networks.

Some owners are reporting on technology blogs and Apple’s own forums that the update is deleting contacts information, as well as photos and music, on iPhones that have not been modified in any way.

Gmail was found to have a critical vulnerable spot for the second time this week. This vulnerability allows malicious websites to add a filter to your Gmail account and have all your emails forwarded to wherever they wish!! Gmail which is still in beta has been highly successful and very popular among email users across the globe seems to be on its way to an upgrade, hopefully they will have all vulnerabilities fixed and end users will have a more secure back-end and an even more powerful interface once the new Google mail or the Gmail is released to the general public.

The full story on the critical bug in gmail can be found here, below is an excerpt-

Security researcher Petko Petkov has revealed a cross-site request forgery vulnerability in Gmail that makes it possible for a malicious web site to surreptitiously add a filter to a user’s Gmail account that forwards e-mail to a third-party address.

Petkov’s proof-of-concept exploit for this vulnerability, which has been independently verified but not publicly released, uses a multipart/form-data POST to send instructions to Gmail’s internal API. The vulnerability can only be exploited when the user is currently logged in to the Gmail service.

This is the second major Google security vulnerability to be revealed this week. On Monday, security researcher Fernando Bedford provided a proof-of-concept exploit for a Google cross-site scripting vulnerability in Google’s Blogspot polls API that facilitated e-mail hijacking and address book sniffing. That vulnerability was fixed by Google shortly after it was reported, but it is presently unclear whether or not the vulnerability discovered by Petkov has been fixed yet.

Here’s one very cool app thats worth waiting .. or is it! It is more or less an Alt+tab replacement, but a very good one. A firm based in Australia has come up with this cool 360 desktop which makes a desktop 360 in the real sense .. 360Desktop is a startup that reorganizes the standard Windows desktop into a panoramic, revolving pane of glass thousands of pixels long. So, you can now have a street of New York or Venice as your background and move along with it.. instead of just a static screen with a wallpaper.

Although the concept is not really new and seems to be somewhat inspired from multiple desktop apps, some might claim its ported directly from Fusion on GNU/Linux(quite similar to the cube) which run on basic GPUs. If the firm decides to keep it Windows only, i believe it will be the one thing that is going to make a Windows PC much more cool(r) than a Apple Mac, yep it that good.. try it and you agree too, although you might have to wait until the company releases the software to general public in the next few days just like everyone else.

Just wondering what kind of graphic and minimum hardware requirements this app would have.. no mention of that anywhere yet! And come to think of what 360 desktop is up against.. its not really that cool, lemme tell you what im talking about, check out CompFiz Fusion here, Looking Glass (needs to be implemented properly) and SphereXP.

Here’s the Full Story @ InfoWeek, below is an excerpt -

360Desktop is a startup that reorganizes the standard Windows desktop into a panoramic, revolving pane of glass thousands of pixels long. 360Desktop is due to debut Wednesday at the DemoFall 2007 show in San Diego. While not for everybody, this reorganization of the desktop opens the door to many additional user interface elements beyond the stack of icons currently found on a typical Microsoft Office desktop, Evan Jones, CEO of the Melbourne, Australia, firm, said in an interview.

360Desktop does not replace the Windows user interface. It overlays and redefines it so the viewing area can be extended, Jones said. He envisions numerous Web resources being added as the user scrolls through what is meant to feel like a continuous pane of glass, instead of just a screen.

He said it also will be a highly personalize-able environment, with some users perhaps using a favorite street scene in New York or Prague as their backdrop as they move around the desktop. As you reach the end of the scene, you keep going, starting around again. The company offers an an artist’s graphic of such a desktop on its Web site.

That’s how much effect google has had on each one of our lives. From Bill Gates to a resident in a remote Ghana village, Steve Jobs to a fresh green apple vendor in India and George Bush to Parvez Musharraf and a thug or Bin Laden, everyone on earth is somehow or the other linked to Google. Google knows what people had for their breakfast, google knows where someone can be found at a given point of time and google knows who your friends are, the possibilities are remarkably huge in number. Yeah so what m saying is the world wouldn’t have been the same without google. I love you Google and i’ll forever be a fanboy of all the products that you shall create and even the ones that ppl may rumor about (google phone anyone?):D

Two weeks ago, AFP informed us that “Google, at age 10, is the official heart of the Internet. Born 10 years ago, the Google Internet search engine has grown into the electronic center of human knowledge by indexing billions of web pages as well as images, books and videos.” That’s true, except that Google is 9 years old. Even if Larry Page and Sergey Brin registered the google.com domain in 1997, Google was officially launched one year later.

“Google opened its doors in September 1998. The exact date when we celebrate our birthday has moved around over the years, depending on when people feel like having cake,” says Google’s help center. You can read more about it directly from Google. In the recent years, Google’s birthday has been celebrated on September 27th with a doodle displayed on the homepage. Happy birthday, Google!

The launch is scheduled for tommorrow according to engadget.

Microsoft is getting official with its Windows Media Center Internet TV feature, which is set to go live in beta fashion tomorrow morning. According to Microsoft, users of Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate will soon be able to download a simple update that will enable them to “enjoy a range of television and video content on their PCs and TV sets [with a Media Center Extender of some sort] without a TV tuner in their PC.” The streaming content will all be ad-supported “by an advertising platform provided by YuMe,” which means that you’ll be getting it gratis. The programming reportedly “comes from MSN Video,” and just over 100 hours of it will be available when the beta begins. To whet your appetite, a few notables that will be available are “full episodes of TV shows such as ‘Arrested Development,’ full-length music concerts by artists such as Chris Cornell, Snoop Dogg, Elton John, Pink, John Mayer and the Pussycat Dolls, movie trailers, news segments from MSNBC, and sports clips from FOX Sports.”

A report by Mess.be reveals that there is yet another new exploit in Windows Live Messenger that makes sharing folders vulnerable to buffer overflow and remote exploitation. I personally have never used the sharing folders feature in Windows Live Messenger. There really is no point in having a sharing folder with a person in your friend list unless and until you trust them beyond doubts and if you do so theres always a risk that someone might use their system to access your sharing folders and make it unusable. If you really need to share files with someone across the internet use services like eSnips.com, Rapidshare.com, Megaupload.com or Megashares.com for that matter which are faster and way too safer. As for the sharing folders- I suggest, you disable the sharing folders right after you install Windows Live Messenger. This new exploit was just in the waiting …. I hope there will be a fix soon for unsuspecting users..

How to Disable Sharing Folders:

Go to Tools -> Options -> Select ‘Sharing Folders’ from the left menu, then on the right panel un-select the check-box on top that says, “Use a sharing folder when I drag a file onto a contacts name in my contact list.”

The report from Mess.be-

Even though the recent webcam vulnerability in MSN/Windows Live Messenger was only just addressed, another exploitable bug has already surfaced. This time it’s a buffer overflow error that affects the Sharing folders feature in Windows Live Messenger 8.1 (and maybe other versions) running on Windows XP.

The safety of the Sharing folder feature got questioned before, but we now have a concrete example of how it can be abused. A Spanish security expert going by the name of Lostmon Lords has discovered that an attacker can cause a Denial-of-Service (DoS) or even execute arbitrary code in Windows Live Messenger 8.1 by means of a specially crafted jpg, wmf, gif, ico or doc-file.

blue screen of death, The attacker can “Create a sharing folder” for its victim and then put the malformed file into the physical location of that folder on his hard drive (My Computer > My Sharing Folders > victim@hotmail.com). Note that if the attacker would drag & drop the file directly into the Messenger window, his own client would crash. Considering that the victim has accepted the sharing folder, the attacker can simply click the sharing icon to crash Windows Live Messenger, or even Windows XP entirely when the process isn’t terminated in time. The victim then needs to delete the sharing folder entirely to cease the exploitation.

The vulnerability was discovered on the 20th of August 2007 and reported to Microsoft on the 23rd. The company responded one day later that it will address the issue in “the next service pack”. Although there have been no reports yet of actual exploitation via this method, you should note that in order to protect yourself you should avoid sharing folders with contacts you don’t trust.
